The choice as an "example for imitation" of the FCM 36 tank was made for a reason - in tests with firing, its inclined welded armor showed higher quality of resistance to attack. Accordingly, the hull AMX 38 was to be assembled from sheets of rolled armored steel by welding, and the frontal and stern armored hulls of the hull were supposed to be made with unified bent parts.

Rational angles of inclination found their place only in the bow of the hull and in the cranked box, while the armor plates of the stern were connected at right angles. Another "innovation" was the use of a single-hatch hatch mechanic driver instead of the more familiar then bicuspid. The maximum reservation of AMX 38 reached 40 mm.

The tank received a completely new running gear consisting of 15 small-diameter support rollers for each side, four supporting rollers, a rear drive and a front steering wheel.
